Summary:

Read our Stablehost review to find out if their network reliability and free site migration and site builder can be the right choice for your hosting needs.

StableHost is a hosting provider that has caught our eye numerous times in the past. With appealing pricing and reliable servers being their main selling points, it comes as no surprise that they have garnered such positive feedback across the Internet.

With unlimited traffic shared hosting packages starting at $4.95 a month and coupled with some awesome interface add-ons, Stablehost really knows how to offer bang for your buck when it comes to hosting.

So, could they be the right choice for your website? Let’s take a closer look at some of their offerings and services.

StableHost Pricing & Plans

Stablehost offers shared hosting plans in two tiers, with standard unlimited and enterprise level hosting available to choose from. Additionally, they also offer three different VPS plans as well as Reseller hosting packages.

As mentioned above, StableHost’s plans are geared towards being affordable while maintaining excellent hardware like state of the art Dual E5-2620 CPUs to give you the best speeds and reliability. Even if you choose StableHost’s Starter package ($4.95 a month for unlimited ), your site’s data will also be stored on SSD’s, a feature that comes standard with all hosting plans.

The enterprise shared hosting plan can be somewhat expensive at $29.95 a month, but when you consider in the premium support, doubled CPU resources and a 99.99% SLA, it could be an attractive solution for your growing business.

If you have outgrown your shared hosting plan, VPS packages are also available for purchase. Although not as affordable as Digital Ocean or as feature-rich as Linode, their VPS packages are comparable to most cloud hosting providers. With one GB of RAM, one CPU core and two TB of bandwidth coming with their “VZ1GB” plan ($9.95 a month), StableHost could be a viable cloud hosting provider for your business.

We really liked that you also have the option for free site migration with no setup fees with StableHost, a feature that might cost you $10 or more with other hosting providers.

Video Review

Check out this StableHost video on how to create MySQL databases using their CPanel interface.

StableHost Interface / Security

StableHost uses industry-standard CPanel as their interface, a welcome feature for those of us disappointed by custom control panels (or none at all!)offered by other providers in the past.

Using CPanel means that backups, MySQL databases, and billing can all be accessed from the comfort and ease of the main interface. You also have the option to use Softaculous script installer, enable Cloudflare CDN and view various site statistics through logs.

Your shared account will come pre-installed with a lot of the popular web development software out there, with phpBB, Drupal, WordPress and Joomla standing out. We also really were impressed that they also have a decent amount of e-commerce services pre-installed, with Magento, PrestaShop and Zen Cart being just a few examples.

If you require a site-building tool, Stablehost offers Site.Pro at no cost for subscribers.

Stablehost_site_builder If you are signing up for a VPS package, SolusVM comes included, an interface that has a reputation for being lightweight and easy to learn. Newcomers to VPS hosting will appreciate the layout of SolusVM, with 1-click management of your server and handy site statistics displayed right on the main page.StableHost_SolusVM

When it comes to your site’s security, StableHost has you covered with default mod_security firewall settings, R1Soft Daily Backups and SpamExperts spam protection. SSH access is also available, although we were disappointed to learn that there is a one-time fee of $2.50 to enable SSH access. IP blocking and Hotlink protection are also available through the comfort of CPanel.

If you need additional security for your site in the form of an SSL certificate, StableHost sells AlphaSSL certificates for $39.95 a year.

StableHost Speed and Uptime

When it comes to Stablehost’s speeds, there is no shortage of nice things that we can say about it. We were impressed by the enterprise-level hardware in the form of Dual E5-2620 CPUs, 96 GBs of RAM and SSDs, while the 200 Gbps network is powerful enough to handle potentially-absurd levels of traffic.

Stablehost has a speed test tool available to test their network speeds, and this didn’t disappoint as we were able to download a test file and use Pingdom’s website speed test to properly see what kind of speeds they offer.

Stablehost_speedtest

We were able to download a 100 MB test file from their Amsterdam server location in just 31 seconds, with an average speed of 3 MB/s (from our Budapest, Hungary office). Our Pingdom speed test was impressive as well, with their WordPress test site (albeit a meager 200 KB page) loading in just under .8 seconds!

While Stablehost has a 99.99% SLA for enterprise shared hosting, “normal” shared and VPS plans are only advertised with a 99.9% uptime. While this .09% difference isn’t huge (roughly 40 minutes a month), the fact that they guarantee different uptimes for plans has us slightly worried.

Cloudflare CDN is available to activate and manage through CPanel, an especially helpful service if you are dealing with dynamic content on your site or visitors from various areas of the world.

StableHost Customer Service

Stablehost takes a slightly disappointing approach when dealing with customer service, as they have different levels of support depending on your plan with them.

Stablehost_customerservice

For instance, signing up for the standard shared hosting plan means you only have e-mail support available while signing up for enterprise shared hosting means you get 365/24/7 e-mail and phone support, as well as Script Troubleshooting and a website recovery tool. While it’s within Stablehost’s rights to offer different levels of support per plan, it was slightly disappointing considering not many other hosting providers do the same.

With the absence of live chat support, we gave Stablehost e-mail support a whirl to see what kind of response times we could get. We sent our test question at 5 AM EST on a weekday, thinking it would be at least a few hours before we received a response. Instead, we immediately received a reply stating our ticket was opened and even received an adequate reply to our question within an hour!

Stablehost claims to only have level 3 support technicians (in contrast to other companies only offering level 1), and this was especially clear after our telephone chat with a representative. Not only were they knowledgeable about our SpamExperts-related question, there was also a certain feeling of genuineness that we sometimes find lacking with other providers.

It’s important to note that while Stablehost offers a 45-day money back guarantee for shared hosting plans, VPS plans do not.

StableHost Review Conclusion

I liked

  • SSDs for all plans
  • Free site migration
  • High-quality server hardware

I wasn’t so sure about

  • Different levels of support
  • Paying for SSH-access

I hated

  • Nothing

Stablehost stays true to their name by providing high-quality, reliable hosting. Additionally, with SSDs standard for all plans and their addition of custom SpamExperts filtering, stability and speed are just the tip of the iceberg with this provider.

Although it was disappointing to learn of some missing elements (free SSH access, live chat) we’ve come to expect with shared hosting providers, the prices across the board are low enough to make up for some of these shortfalls.

With a 45-day money back guarantee for all shared plans, go ahead and give Stablehost a no-risk test run to find out if they hold true to their name!
