KnownHost Pricing & Plans

You may purchase any KnownHost plan using PayPal or a major credit card such as: Visa, MasterCard, or American Express. There is also a provision to pay by check. However, the FAQ section notes this as being on a ‘per user’ basis.

KnownHost serves up a smorgasbord of different hosting options from managed hosting with shared, VPS, and dedicated server plans, with the additional option to customize your own VPS plan according to the resources your site requires. Pricing varies depending on the payment term you choose, with a 5% or so discount available across all plan options if you commit to pay annually. Backups are carried out every other day on VPS plans, meaning you don’t have to worry about irretrievably losing your site to some unforeseen catastrophe.

KnownHost Managed VPS

KnownHost offers two types of VPS plans – the standard VPS plans starting at $25 pictured above, and the SSD VPS shown below. The standard VPS plans use SATA-II, drives and the SSD VPSs use pure solid state drives. The SSDs are a great option if you run applications like WordPress (which is what you’re currently reading on).

Now you might require more computing power but remember cost is a factor – a dedicated server is going to be more expensive. With a dedicated server, the entire server is allocated for your use alone. With the VPS plans above the physical server is partitioned into separate packages and each customer receives a dedicated portion of the capacity in terms of RAM, disk space, and bandwidth. CPU is shared using VPS plans, whereas the dedicated servers below are solely yours.

KnownHost Dedicated Servers

For example, you have lots of streaming going on, or you send out tons of bulk emails, then a dedicated server is a good option. On the other hand, if you’re just running standard websites and your RAM and disk space requirements aren’t excessive, then a VPS is likely a better and more cost effective option – it’s subjective as to your own personal needs

KnownHost Features

Those who opt for dedicated hosting through KnownHost will have access to Softaculous script installer for a small, and RVSiteBuilder at no extra charge, though, VPS customers will have to pay (but a tad annoying) $1 per month fee on top and $5 more respectively for these handy (and often included) add-ons. You’ll additionally have to purchase access to either the CPanel/WHM or the more economical DirectAdmin should you go the VPS route. It’s worth taking the time to sift through your needs and come up with the right plan to fit them like a glove, rather than seizing on the cheapest-seeming option, only to be disappointed when must-have features come extra. You tend to get what you pay for with hosting providers, and KnownHost is no different, as we’ll explore in more detail below.

KnownHost Features

KnownHost isn’t affiliated with CloudFlare, but not to worry. Support staff are happy to get you started integrating CloudFlare as your CDN. KnownHost also makes some pretty impressive and not too unsubstantiated claims of having 99.9% server uptime. What’s more, servers are only rebooted in the rarest circumstances and for a minimal downtime, such as an upgrade. If this all sound appealing, give KnownHost a look yourself using the link below, Support is superb.

KnownHost Speed and Reliability

KnownHost Has three data centers which equally cover the contiguous United States you may choose from: Seattle, Texas or Baltimore. The TierPoint Dallas center boasts 2N power and multi-homed connectivity, for Tier-1 performance.

KnownHost Network

The Seattle Datacenter covers the West Coast with a BGP blend of multiple Tier 1 providers: Level 3, NTT, and TATA Communications, as well as Tier 2 networks such as Specture Networks and the Seattle Internet Exchange, and is used by many reputable brands such as Microsoft and Yahoo. Meanwhile, the Baltimore East Coast Datacenter features a BGP blend of Network up to level three and is utilized by digital content and TV provider Comcast.

KnownHost’s datacenters are monitored by on and offsite cyber-security teams, in addition to physically secured access to their facilities. Better still for the rightly DDoS concerned, both the mod_security and mod_evasive firewall modules are baked into all servers.

KnownHost Interface

KnownHost doesn’t offer SSL certificates, though, staff will happily assist you in implementing them. For your website control panels you’ve got two options, the ‘people’s champ’ CPanel/WHM, or a bit techier DirectAdmin.

KnownHost Website

VPS customers signing up for either of the first two plans pictured in the Pricing section of this review will have to pay either an extra $5 a month for DirectAdmin or $5 for CPanel/WHM.Dedicated servers come with your choice of control panel baked right in.

KnownHost Control PanelIt’s also nice to see a dedicated client area to keep track of billing and have an internal helpdesk route, to avoid the external site altogether, and keep track of things in an orderly fashion (as managing a website inevitably comes with its organizational headaches).

Customer Service

KnownHost Support

The KnownHost LiveChat Support is only available during working hours (8-5 CST Monday-Friday for Sales inquiries only), and it’s superb. The staff did an excellent job addressing my queries from the slightly pedantic to the questions that seemed pertinent enough to be asked by typical prospective consumers who aren’t in the process of writing a review.

KnownHost LiveChat

My anonymous ‘Jo-without-the-e’ moniker did nothing to detract from the tech support team’s terse yet informative responses. It’s great to have a LiveChat where the people on the other hand clearly aren’t bots pre-loaded with stock questions while also giving off the impression of proper training – as opposed to sitting behind a computer with a lengthy guidebook they’d have to scroll through before addressing any customer issues. There’s also a fulsome User Forum and FAQ section for more the DIY types, or those who’d like to take the crowd-sourcing route.

  1. Things with KnownHost were going fine for a while until their hardware suffered a critical failure and the only backup on the system that WASN’T corrupt for some reason was from 6 months prior. That meant I lost six months of site updates, user contributed content, and hard work. You would think they would at least have offered to refund me for the six months of hosting fees I paid for that they lost all content for. Nope. I am issuing this warning to any people looking for a hosting provider… if you are not one of those individuals who backs up their full website on YOUR OWN personal computer on a daily basis… don’t use KnownHost. Switching to somebody who has a backup system offsite and who knows how to treat a good customer.
