5 Best Hosting For ShoppingCart.NET

If you ever want to build an eCommerce site using ASP.NET, there are a lot of choices out there.

Some are open source and free, while some are commercial solutions with complicated licensing. There are also hosted solutions but then, why would you be looking for a .NET-specific app if you just want to go with a hosted solution? Technology behind the scenes matters for a hosted solution.

So we can safely assume that you want to develop and host your own. Fair enough. In fact, it will let you have a lot more control. So even if you are using an open source solution, you can always customize it to your heart’s content.

Creating your own solution gives you a lot of flexibility and you can build something that fits all your needs like a glove. But it also can take a lot of time and quite a fair bit of money. Plus, sometimes it is faster to use an open source solution and build on that rather than starting from scratch.

IF you choose to go with a pre-built solution, then there are literally hundred of solutions out there. So you will have no problem with that.

ShoppingCart.NET

ShoppingCart.NET is one of those solutions, developed in C# using .NET 4.0. But really, we think they need much better name than just “Shopping Cart .NET”. Apart from the branding, it is easily customizable and — best of all — it’s available for free.

The developers seem to focus more on back-end, so you may be disappointed with how the front end looks at first. But rest assured that you can customize it anyway you want to, so there is no need to worry.

For hosting, we have compiled a list of our 5 best hosting services that work well with ShoppingCart.NET. Check them out after the break, and don’t forget to leave some comments!

Winner – Arvixe – From $4/month

arvixe-logo

We have to rank Arvixe at #1 since they are really good when it comes to Windows hosting. Plus, Arvixe doesn’t specialize in one type of hosting. Instead, they will rock your world by specializing in a wide range of hosting services. At Arvixe, you get not just VPS servers but also reseller hosting, shared hosting, and dedicated servers. The company has been around since 2003. Since they offer both Windows and Linux hosting for shared hosting customers, hosting ShoppingCart.NET with them is a piece of cake.

There are only two classes in shared hosting plans — Personal Class and Business Class. You can decide either, but for smaller sites like SMBs or private sites, we urge you to go with Personal Class plans. It’s true that you cannot expect it to handle super heavy traffic and demanding loads. However, for the price that you pay, you get pretty great deal. The Personal Class Windows plan will cost you just $5 a month. The Personal Class Linux will cost you $4 a month, in case you are interested. For all plans, you get unlimited storage and bandwidth. You can host up to 6 sites on an account.

Business Class plans are a lot more suited for websites expecting heavy traffic, so they are your options if you intend to do heavy online marketing to promote your sites. You’re going to get a free SSL certificate and a dedicated IP address. Your account will be hosted on a server with better optimization. The Business Class Windows plan costs $28 a month. That’s a good price given what you are getting.

2. myHosting – From $4.95/month

A well-known Canadian hosting firm, myHosting has been operating since 1997 and now serving over 50,000 customers from 180 countries. It’s actually a sister company to Mail2Web, a reputable e-mail service provider for businesses. The company might not be super famous like BlueHost and HostGator, but it’s undoubtedly a great option for shared hosting services.

But shared hosting isn’t the only thing they provide. MyHosting offers a wide array of hosting services. You can get shared hosting, reseller, VPS and e-mail hosting but their specialty is business hosting. The Private shared hosting plan is only $4.95 a month, however only the Linux platform is available. If you go with annual billing plan, then you also get a free domain in addition to unlimited storage and bandwidth.

Since we need to host ShoppingCart.NET on Windows hosting, we are interested in the Business hosting plan. This hosting plan will cost you $9.95 a month, and while it appears pricier compared to the most, it’s not just Windows hosting. Instead, it is part of a dual-platform package: Windows Server 2008 and Linux CentOS. Yup, your one hosting account will get two stacks! So essentially, you can run your open source apps and .NET at once. Gone is the need to keep two separate accounts. You have access to the best of both worlds! Whenever you need to run ASP.NET or something that needs the Windows platform, it’ll run from your Windows server. Whenever you run technologies like PHP, it’ll run from Linux servers. For ShoppingCart.NET, it will run only from the .NET platform.

3. InterServer – From $4.95/month

Interserver-logo

InterServer awes us with their extremely affordable VPS plans. Usually, VPS tends to cost much more than Shared hosting. With 14 years of industry experience under their belt, we are more than inclined to recommend InterServer to anyone looking for an affordable entry-level VPS solution. The Hosting industry is a very saturated business, and thriving in this business is very difficult. This is exactly what InterServer has done for 14 years. That shows a lot about their quality and dedication.

VPS is not the only thing InterServer offers. In fact, you can find other services like shared hosting and dedicated servers. Their dedicated servers are also entry level, however. Their shared hosting plan is very generic, boring, and nothing interesting. Heck, we won’t even talk about it here at all. So our main interest here is in their awesome VPS server lineup.

InterServer offers affordable starter level VPS solutions. Usually, VPS solutions cost a ton. But with InterServer, things are a lot less expensive. You are going to pay just $6 a month for a VPS slice running Linux. Yes, it’s that affordable. It’s pretty much the cost of a shared hosting service. Since we want to host ASP.NET for ShoppingCart.NET, we’ll need a Windows VPS. It’s somewhat pricier but still quite affordable at only $22 a month (due to the Windows licensing cost). With each VPS slice, you’ll get get 25GB of disk space, 6mbps connection and 376MB dedicated RAM (which roughly translates to around 18000MB bandwidth a month). The number of CPU cores is 1 and it’ll increase by 1 every 5 slices. You can readily run your.NET applications on InterServer Windows VPS without much hassle, so running ShoppingCart.NET won’t be a problem.

4. Omnis Network – From $5.95/month

omnis-logo

Maybe you don’t want to go through the hassle of configuring a VPS. Maybe you just want a simple and cheap Windows hosting for your next ShoppingCart.NET powered site. Then you should consider going with Omnis Network. The company is well known for for their shared cloud hosting (which is similar to shared hosting in features, and in fact, it is just shared hosting with different name and perhaps a bit more robust underlying technology), Omnis Network is pretty affordable for everyone.

You can get both Linux and Windows hosting at Omnis. But it’s not like myHosting though, since you are not going to get a dual-platform solution with one account. Instead, you will have two plans, one on Linux and one on Windows. You gotta make your choice and stick to one. For ShoppingCart.NET the choice is clear. Both plans are also quite similar in terms of features, except that they are running on different platforms, so you don’t have to trouble yourself with choosing the features. Omnis uses their own version of control panel simply called Account Manager so you can’t really hope to get the Plesk level of advanced configuration to control your account though. It’s just enough for smaller sites.

Windows Cloud Hosting plan will cost you only $7.95 a month. It comes with unlimited bandwidth and storage, and you will get free domain name if you sign up for a year or more. Good enough to run a small ShoppingCart.NET site, but not really for bigger sites.

5. MochaHost – From $2.48

mochahost

With services ranging from shared hosting, resellers hosting, VPS to dedicated servers, MochaHost has been serving the budget end of market since 2003. Although they have both Windows and Linux hosting, they tend to prioritize a bit on Linux hosting when they market and advertise their website. But their Windows shared hosting is pretty okay too. One thing that surprises us is that they guarantee 100% uptime. For a budget hosting provider to have an 100% uptime SLA, it’s rare.

MochaHost also has an unusual guarantee. Most other companies offer either a 30- or 45-day money back guarantee. MochaHost? You can go with either 180-day risk free or a 30-day money back guarantee. The money back guarantee is familiar to everyone. For the 180-day risk free option, you will get a pro-rated refund for your long term commitment. For example, if you sign up for a 2 year plan and cancel the account within 180 days, then the remaining unused money is refunded.

There are three shared hosting plans to choose from under each platform, but we won’t talk about Linux here since we are only looking at Windows hosting. The “Soho” plan costs $2.48 a month and is pretty suitable for smaller sites. You will get unlimited disk space and data transfer, but only 10 databases and 200MB of database size in total. That’s not a lot, but it’s enough for small sites. The Business plan will cost you just $3.98 a month and it seems to be better suited for a medium-size website with decent traffic. If you want to do eCommerce sites or expect heavy traffic, maybe you should go with the Mocha plan which costs $8.37 a month. You get unlimited databases and database size with both plans.

Visit MochaHost

Conclusion

ShoppingCart.NET seems to look like a barebones framework at first, but you can never discount its flexibility and the customization level it provides you. It is an amazing eCommerce solution which deserves equally good web hosting. Plus, for an eCommerce site, you need to consider things like hosting server performance so it is even more important. If you think you want to evaluate other options, then head on to our hosting services comparison tool and compare the plans in our database.
