5 Best Hosting For Non-Profits

Every non-profit needs a website.

Before you say “thanks for stating the obvious”, let us clarify a bit. When an independent survey was out in last 2011, it was revealed that a shocking number of non-profits don’t have a website. In fact, there are many reasons leading up to why they don’t have a website.

It’s not that they don’t want it. For most non-profits, they want to have a website but the budget concerns are prohibiting them from building one. For some, they don’t think a website could contribute anything to their cause. Nothing could be further from the truth!

It is true that it can cost some decent amount of money to hire a web designer and create a website. Sometimes, the cost might not justify the benefits. And for those that think a website is just an extra, we can give you at least 50 reasons how a website can be beneficial to your non-profit.

Thing is, you don’t really need to hire a web designer to create a website. There are loads of very well-designed themes freely available on the Web. You can just download one for WordPress, buy an affordable hosting service and put up a website. All under 8 hours or lesser.

While we can’t help you with choosing a theme or setting up a website, we can advise you with good and affordable hosting services. So here are top 5 for non-profits, right after the break.

Site5 is one company that we would not hesitate to recommend whenever someone ask for a web host. Their pricing is really good, their customer support is top notch, and you have quite a lof choices with Site5. One thing you will absolutely love with Site5 is their customer support team’s SLA, which states thatĀ if their support team doesn’t respond to you within 24 hours, your account will be credited as a token of apology. Now how awesome is that? Site5 doesn’t measure their support in hours or days, but in minutes! Plus they also offer 45 days money back guarantee which is 15 days more than industry standard.

A home for over 250 servers, 18 data centers around the world and serving 200,000+ domains, Site5’s promise is that they won’t oversell. And somehow we think they are managing it quite well too, given that their servers are pretty well-optimized and we never “feel” the downtimes even with some of our sites getting high traffics.

They have optimized their servers for popular web apps, like WordPress, Drupal, Joomla or even eCommerce applications like WooCommerce, Magento and OpenCommerce.

If you have been thinking to use Joomla, then you maybe happy to know that SiteGround offers free Joomla templates (relieves you from having to hunt down and pick one) and extensions. You will also get free technical support for your Joomla sites so that’s totally cool! It is not that common for hosting providers to offer technical assistant for individual web apps but hey, why not take advantage of what SiteGround offers and go with it?

The shared hosting plans are quite affordably priced too, starting from just $3.95 a month, and you get unlimited storage and bandwidth. You have to also pay $14.95 as a setup fee too but it is waived if you go with 12 months or longer payment.

3. Arvixe – From $4/month

While other hosting companies specialize in shared hosting or VPS or something else, Arvixe takes a different approach. They offer several services and seem to do it quite well, in order to keep their options open. Plus, with their shared hosting services, they also offer both Linux and Windows hosting so if you are thinking of using an ASP.NET script for your site, then Arvixe is totally for you.

There are two classes of shared hosting plans to choose from: one is Personal Class and another is Business Class. Personal Class is more suitable for smaller sites while Business Class gets stuffs like dedicated IP address and free SSL certificate so you might want to skip it. The Personal Class hosting plan starts from $4 a month for Linux, and Windows plan will cost you just $5 a month. With that, you have unlimited storage and bandwidth, and can host up to 6 domains. If you want to host unlimited domains, then shell out $1 more for either plan.

Business Class plans also share similar features except they get SSL certificate and dedicated C-class IP, and Linux plan starts from $22 a month, while Windows plan will start from $27 a month.

If you would only trust with a hosting company that has millions of domains on their servers, then HostGator is totally for you. It is also arguably the most well-known and reputed shared hosting company in the world! With over 8 million domains and 400,000 customers, HostGator is pretty huge company. With customers from over 200 countries, it’s hard to go wrong with HostGator.

While they are reputed for shared hosting services, they also offer VPS and dedicated servers too. But what we are now interested here is their shared hosting, so let’s take a look at them.

All hosting plans are backed with a 45-day money back guarantee so you are pretty safe within that period if you just want to try out the service. The starter shared hosting plan will set you back only $7.16 a month if you pay monthly or every 6 months. However, if you like it a lot and commit to HostGator for 3 years, then it will only cost you $3.96 a month ($142.56 for 3 years). That’s pretty much a steal considering what you are getting.

For those prices, you will get unlimited space and bandwidth. And while HostGators also limit the system resources each shared hosting account can use, it seems to be optimizing it well since all websites on shared hosting servers seem to have decent loading time and processing resources. If you are thinking of a high traffic site though, you definitely should be using a VPS or something more powerful.

5. Omnis Network – From $5.95/month

omnis-logo

Omnis Network offers cloud shared hosting on both Linux and Windows platform, so if you are looking for a Windows host because that’s what you prefer or since you want to use an ASP.NET web app, then you could go with them. There aren’t a lot of information published about the company, but they seem pretty stable since they have been around since 1999 and serving over 400,000 domains.

The uptime SLA is 99.9% so we would say it’s decent, although there aren’t any uptime and downtime statistics published anywhere on their website. Digging through WebHostingTalk and other hosting forums don’t come up with much information either. If you are looking for cPanel, then look elsewhere since Omnis Network uses their own in-house control panel called Account Manager which is quite okay but not as advance or robust as cPanel.

Linux Cloud Hosting Plan will cost you just $5.95 a month and comes with unlimited storage plus bandwidth. If you want Windows hosting, then be prepared to shell out $7.95 a month, which also comes with same feature set as Linux plan. You will also get one free domain name if you signup for yearly payment plan.
