5 Best Hosting For .NET

19.9% of the Web is powered by ASP.NET.

19.9%. So one-fifth of the Web is coded in ASP.NET.

We will let that sink in before we move on to even contemplate how many millions of websites that would be. According to Netcraft’s survey in May 2013, it is estimated that around 672,837,096 websites are there. 20% of that would be 134,567,419. A whopping 134.567 million websites. Certainly not a small number at all.

ASP.NET is a technology by Microsoft. While it is not wildly popular like PHP (which dominates the market share by powering 79.4% of websites), it is definitely a good technology. Whether you are looking for forum, CMS, blogging platform or eCommerce platform, there is no doubt that you will find what you need developed using ASP.NET. So the key question here is where to host them.

The thing is that while web hosting services using Linux server are literally everywhere, Windows web hosts are a bit trickier to find. They are not rare, but they can be expensive. Or poorly maintained. Or a combination of both plus other drawbacks. The expense seems to be the most annoying problem. We can get Linux hosting at just around $4 or $5. But Windows hosting? Good luck finding a reputable host at those prices.

But it doesn’t mean it’s impossible to find one with a good balance of affordability, features, performance and above all, good customer support.

In fact, it is exactly the reason why we are writing this article. Here are 5 best hosting for your next .NET site, right after the break.

Winner – myHosting – From $4.95/month

myHosting might not be super famous like HostGator and BlueHost, but it is a reputable company in its own right. Established in 1997 in Canada, the company is currently serving over 50,000 customers from 180 countries in the world. It is also a sister company to Mail2Web, a well-known email service provider for businesses.

myHosting offers very diverse range of hosting services. You can find from shared hosting, reseller, to VPS and email hosting but they specializes in shared business hosting. Personal shared hosting plan starts from just $4.95 a month. The plan comes with unlimited storage and bandwidth plus a free domain if you go with yearly billing plan.

Our interest here is in Business hosting plan though, since we want ASP.NET. myHosting’s Business shared hosting plan costs only $9.95 a month, and it is not just Windows hosting. Instead, it offers a dual-platform: Linux CentOS and Windows Server 2008. Yup, a dual platform so that you can run both open source scripts and .NET all at the same time. You no longer need to maintain two separate accounts. Having access to the best of both world is just a bliss. When you run ASP.NET, it will run from Windows server, while open-source technologies will be run from Linux servers. The plan also comes with a dedicated IP address.

If you want to run an eCommerce site, then eCommerce plan is totally the way to go since you will get every features from Business plan, as well as a free dedicated SSL certificate, private IP address and a license for Pinnacle Cart eCommerce. How awesome is that?

2. Arvixe – From $4/month

If you are looking for a hosting company that is good with all sorts of services and not limited to just one or two, then Arvixe might be something you like. You can get shared hosting, VPS servers and dedicated servers with Arvixe. The company has been around since 2003, and as they offer both Windows and Linux hosting for shared hosting customers, that totally fits our bill.

There are two classes in shared hosting plans – Personal Class and Business Class. For smaller sites like small businesses or personal sites, Personal Class plans are just perfect. You can’t expect it to handle heavy traffic and demanding loads though. Personal Class Linux plan will cost you $4 a month but that’s not what we want here. For hosting ASP.NET, Personal Class Windows costs only $5 a month. You will get unlimited storage and data transfer, and you can host up to 6 websites on an account.

Business Class plans are a lot better for websites expecting heavy traffic and heavy demands for resources. Not only you will get free SSL certificate and dedicated IP address, the accounts will be hosted on servers with better optimization too. And more system resources will be reserved for each account so that you won’t encounter your websites slowing down often. Business Class Windows plan is priced at $28.

3. InterServer – From $4.95/month

Interserver-logo

Web hosting industry is really saturated, with a lot of competitors popping up like mushrooms everyday. And it is even harder to survive in this industry for more than a few years. But that’s exactly what InterServer has been doing, with 14 years of experience in the industry under their belt.

InterServer offers shared hosting, VPS and dedicated servers. Their shared hosting plans are very generic though and not really good enough to capture our interest. No, our interest here is in their amazing VPS server offers.

InterServer offers really affordable and amazingly good VPS solutions. Usually, VPS servers can cost quite a bit (at least in the case of InterServer’s competitors). Not with InterServer. At just $6 a month, you can get a VPS slice running Linux. Since we want to host ASP.NET, we will need a Windows VPS. It’s still very affordable at just $22 a month because of Windows licensing cost. With each slice, you are going to get 25GB of disk space, 376MB dedicated RAM and 6mbps connection. CPU core will be 1 and it will increase by 1 every 5 slices. You can easily run your .NET applications on InterServer Windows VPS without much hassles.

4. Omnis Network – From $5.95/month

Maybe you don’t want to go through the hassles of configuring a VPS. Maybe you just want a simple and cheap Windows hosting for your next .NET site. Then Omnis Network is something you should consider. Well-known for their shared cloud hosting (which is similar to shared hosting in features), Omnis Network is pretty affordable.

You can get both Linux and Windows hosting at Omnis, but it’s not like myHosting though, since you are not going to get dual-platform on one account. Instead, you will have two plans, one on Linux and one on Windows. Both plans are quite similar in terms of features, except that they are running on different platforms. Omnis uses their own version of control panel simply called Account Manager so you can’t really hope to get Plesk level of advance configurations to control your account though. Just enough for smaller sites.

Windows Cloud Hosting plan will cost you only $7.95 a month. It comes with unlimited bandwidth and storage, and you will get free domain name if you sign up for a year or more.

5. MochaHost – From $2.48

mochahost

With services ranging from shared hosting, resellers hosting, VPS to dedicated servers, MochaHost has been serving budget end of market since 2003. Although they have both Windows and Linux hosting, they tend to prioritize a bit on Linux hosting when they market and advertise their website. But their Windows shared hosting is pretty okay too. One thing that surprises us is that they guarantee 100% uptime. For a budget hosting provier to have 100% uptime SLA, it’s rare.

MochaHost is also different in what they offer as risk free guarantee too. Most other companies offer either 30-day or 45-day money back guarantee. MochaHost? You can go with either 180 days risk free or 30 days money back guarantee. Money back guarantee is same as what we all know. For 180 days risk free option, you will get a pro-rated refund for your long term commitment. Like if you sign up for 2 years plan and cancel the account within 180 days, then remaining unused money will be refunded.

There are three shared hosting plans to choose from under each platform, but we won’t talk about Linux here since we are only looking at Windows hosting. Soho plan costs $2.48 a month and is pretty suitable for smaller sites. You will get unlimited disk space and data transfer, but only 10 databases and 200MB of database size in total. That’s not a lot but for small sites, it’s enough. Business plan will cost you just $3.98 a month and it seems to be better suited for medium-size website with decent traffic. If you want to do eCommerce sites or expect heavy traffic, maybe you should go with Mocha plan which cost $8.37 a month. You get unlimited databases and database size with both plans.
